Since 1938, the Certified Court Reporters Association of New Jersey has been serving its members to advance our profession.  But the hard truth is, now, more than 85 years later, we face challenges in the industry that threaten our very existence. We've all heard about the threat of digitals and AI, but the real threat to our very existence is our dwindling membership.

CCRA-NJ has been instrumental in helping to fight the New Jersey Department of Labor's efforts to recategorize our current status as independent contractors, a fight which was fought and won by CCRA-NJ, but the DOL has begun auditing court reporting agencies once again, despite the fact that the Appellate Court rendered its decision in February 2024 upholding the statutory language of Section 43:21-19(i)(10) which specifically states:  “Services performed by a legal transcriber, or certified court reporter certified pursuant to P.L.1940, c.175 (C.45:15B-1 et seq.), shall not be deemed to be employment subject to the ‘unemployment compensation law.’"
